This allows for wind spray and loss as well as providing a more even coverage on the rooftop. Metal impact or butterfly sprinklers should be used for this type of system.Įach sprinkler head should be located so that its spray overlaps the next adjoining sprinkler, we call this head-to-head coverage. WHAT ARE THE BEST SPRINKLER HEADS TO USE? Do not keep fuel in pump unit over winter as old fuel will deteriorate pump performance.Always empty pump through the drainage hole when not in use for longer periods, to avoid rust and corrosion of inner pump.Check pump for oil and fuel before starting.Prime pump before starting (fill pump with water).Keep the pump out of the weather and protected from the elements.Always make sure all fittings are tight around the suction hose.Check out the Matala Pump Defenders to go over the top of your foot valve as an insurance for your fire pump to make sure nothing blocks up the suction line leaving your pump to run dry!ĭural Irrigation can advise you on the correct pump for your needs, or visit our Firefighting Pumps to have a browse for yourself! Position your pump as close as possible to the water supply and use a 40mm or 50mm foot valve with a strainer when drawing water from an underground tank or dam. Only use an electric pump if you have a backup power supply such as a generator. Your system will require a petrol (or diesel) powered pump as power is likely to be lost during bush fires. The independent water supply could be a swimming pool, a rainwater tank, a detention tank or dam and should be at least 22,000 litres. As Mains Water Pressure is likely to be lost during bush fires, connect the Sprinkler System to an independent water supply.EFFECTIVE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS SHOULD MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA: If there is a bush fire in your area and your property is well prepared it is important that you stay at home to start the roof sprinkler system manually and help fire-fighters protect your property, for as long as it is safe. Roof sprinkler systems, also known as external water spray systems, will add considerable protection for a well prepared property.Ī roof sprinkler system is used to cover the property with water and at the same time can be designed as a fire fighting resource.Īpart from sprinkler heads, hose outlets can be incorporated into the system – (when there is enough pump capacity), hoses can then be attached and used to put out spot fires. But I do take on the occasional owner/builder project for homeowners who can provide all the required project information.įor a free proposal, please see the Design Page for the information and files needed. The vast majority of my clientele are professionals. one guy dedicated to getting your project done right. That is what you’re getting when you hire me for your designs. In other words, they seem to like the personal touch and service that comes from working with one person. They know that when I’m working on their project, it is the only thing I am working on at that time. I like to believe they prefer that because they know when the call or email, they will be talking to the guy who is designing their project. What I’ve learned since is that my clients actually seem to like the idea of working with a one-man operation better than with a big company.

But I also believed it would look more professional to have a company name on display.

The name Chandler Fire Safety was adopted mainly because I needed something for the website address. I decided to set out on my own as a freelance system designer, working from my home office in the piney woods of southeast Texas, which I have been doing since 2012. I also put in my time as an in-house system designer for another well-established sprinkler installation company there in the Grand Canyon State.Ī few years later, I found myself back in my home state. I was previously part-owner and designer for a sprinkler system design company still in operation in Arizona. I’ve been designing residential fire sprinkler systems for architects, home builders, plumbers/installers and homeowners since 2006. They will not be just another impersonal account for a big operation. I include the picture because I want future clients to see that there is an actual person with whom they will be working. That’s me at my workstation in the photo. I’d like to take a little time to introduce myself.
